We are pleased to be able to bring Oh My Darling to the Holland Community Hall on January 13, 2012.
Tickets are available at the Gallery for $25 each. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Coffee and pie served at 7:00 pm. Opening act "Sylvie Dion and Logan Picton" start at 7:30 pm.

Basic Photography

October 21 to November 21 excluding Remembrance Day

6:30-9:30 pm

Course is limited to 12 students.

Course fee: $130.00

Learn how to care for and use your camera. Explore the various settings, what they do, and how to use them. The course will begin by exploring basic camera controls and what each of them does so that participants will have a basic understanding of their functions. Then the automatic settings will be explored so that students will understand how they work. The rules of art will be explained and explored so that students will have a better understanding of how to set up pictures. Various internal settings including ISO, colour balance, focus points, metering modes, drive modes, colour space and image quality will all be presented and discussed. The presentations will include the manual settings. Students will need access to a tripod for one class which will teach about DOF and movement control. (Students will be able to share tripods).

This course is designed for people who have little or no knowledge about their camera and photography. It is intended to give you a good review of the major settings on a digital camera and how to use them. Students are required to have a camera manual and to bring the manual to each class. This course is hands on and experimental, so please be prepared to try out many options in the class. Bring your camera, have fun.

Intermediate Photography

October 22 to November 22 excluding November 12

9:00 am- 12:00 noon

Course is limited to 12 students.

Course fee: $130.00 plus workbook ($20.00)

This course is an extension of the basic photography course and is only open to students who have a good understanding of their camera and the various functions.

The course begins with a review of the camera controls and setting to ensure that students have a basic understanding. It explores the theory of exposure and the concept of EV (Exposure Value). Throughout the course, rules of art are presented and expanded upon. Participants will look at many pictures and learn to evaluate how they were taken. Learn about the f-16 rule how to use it, DOF degradation, meters and how they work, explore zoom, prime and macro lenses, angle of view, the effects of over and under exposure, what the histogram on your camera does and how to use it, filters what they do and how they work, red eye reduction, panning, use of flash on and off camera.

The content of this course is experimental. Participants are expected to complete assigned experiments each week and to present the results in the class. The intent of the process is to help students learn form each other. If time permits, students will have an opportunity to do a short field trip or studio lighting class.

Studio and Macro

October 22 to November 22 excluding November 12

1:30-4:30 pm

Course is limited to 8 students.

Course fee: $180.00

This course is designed for people who want to lean about lighting in a studio and how to do macro photography in a studio setting. All of the macro concepts learned in the studio are applicable to other settings. Only students who have an excellent understanding of cameras and lenses or who have taken the Intermediate Photography course are encouraged to attend. Because of the equipment requirements the class is limited to eight students. (An equipment use fee and damage deposit is required). The studio will be available for students to book between classes.

Learn about the different kinds of light and safety precautions, light ratios and portraiture. Explore the various lighting configurations. Participants will use a basic portable light set up, but the course will explore more advanced settings. Flash, tungsten and fluorescent light will all be used.

Once students have a basic understanding of how to light a scene in a studio settings, the course will explore macro photography, lenses, extension tubes, lens reversal techniques. Some equipment may be available to students depending upon their camera. The class will also explore ways of taking macro pictures with readily available resources.

Youth Quilting

The Winnipeg Singers

The Winnipeg Singers, Winnipeg’s premiere choir, has long been regarded as one of Canada’s finest choral ensembles. The choir's mandate is to make a diversity of choral music, performed to the highest standard, accessible to a growing audience. The Winnipeg Singers consists of 24 trained voices, performing music that spans the times from the Renaissance to the present. Each year the Choir commissions new Canadian works and premieres other new works for its Manitoba audiences. It presents a concert series each year, engaging some of North America's finest musicians as guests.

Baldur Art Camp

Summer Art Camp in Baldur from August 15 to 18 was a huge success. Camp was full to capacity (20) and all the participants enjoyed themselves greatly. The mornings were filled with traditional pioneer arts and crafts such as quilting and wheat weaving. During the afternoons Karen Gilles taught students a wonderful musical theatre program which they shared with parents and community members on the last day of camp.

Summer Art Camp in Treherne is over...what a great time. All the students were a pleasure and I hope they enjoyed their week. Thanks to Doreen and Annette who showed us all how to make our very our quilt square. Cathy helped us do some very beautiful wheat weaving, thank you. Students go to do Chi Kong with Ginnette , thanks for fitting us in to your busy schedule. A great big thanks to Tessa and Tiana for all their patience and musical skills. You are very telented and we appreciate your hard work.

Mark your calendar for June 29th for our annual bus tour into Winnipeg to see CATS at Rainbow Stage. CATS tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle cats at which time one special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside layer. A true musical phenomenon! Masaki Rising Stars Concert

We were delighted to host an evening concert with Masaki’s Rising Stars of Brandon University on Wednesday, April 20^th at the Baldur Memorial Hall during the Tiger Hills Festival of the Arts. In the afternoon they entertained the students at Holland Elementary School.

Developed by Brandon University Professor and Pianist, Megumi Masaki, Masaki’s Rising Stars is a unique project dedicated to providing BU piano students with professional touring, performance and coaching experience while showcasing their talents to local, national and international audiences. Three of the five young people who entertained us are from Manitoba, one from B.C. and one an exchange student from China. Although the audiences were not great in numbers they were most enthusiastic.

Ladies Night on April 9th is fast approaching. Ticket sales went wonderfully. The doors of the Holland Community Hall will open at 3:00 p.m. A delicious rib dinner with tantalizing desserts will be prepared by chefs Norbert and Dennis. Live entertainment will be provided by Brent Earle thoughout the evening. A lovely fashion show is being planned. There will be lots of time for visiting, shopping and entering draws. Everyone is invited to wear something red to fit with our "Paint the Town Red" theme.

Coming up on April 16 & 17 in Cypress River Memorial Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will be offering retreats to both experienced and beginners.

Coreen Zerr will be leading the experienced weekend teaching two classes. Saturday's class will be "Easy Curved Piecing and Thread Embellishment". Learn a slick way to piece curves with no rules, rulers and no worries about perfect seam allowances. Sunday's class "Mother Naure Surface Textures" is designed to show different ways to create elements of nature.

Saturday's Beginners class will be instructed by Pat Crandell. "Quilt As You Go" is a quick project using fun prints and colours to create a reversable piece.

Sunday's Beginners class "Machine Quilted Tabletopper" will be instructed by Nancy Ross. The emphasis is on machine quilting and applique using echoing, free motion, stippling and stitch in the ditch.

On Saturday March 5th, 2011 a group of aspiring photographers converged at the Tiger Hills Arts Association gallery for full day of instruction by Wayne Benedet. You may remember his work from an exhibit held in our gallery this past summer. His body of work is an intimate account of derelict vehicles woven into the nature of prairie landscapes. With his expert knowledge he lead the class through crash course on basic camera theory and how to capture the essence of a subject.

After a great lunch (Kudos to Cathryn Pedersen and June Negrich) the troop ventured outdoors for an afternoon of hands on instruction. The first stop on our adventure was to Zeghers' Seeds where we found inspiration and put the instruction of the morning to work. Later on we snapped some photos of the Holland Emmanuel Church. With the continued expert guidance of Wayne Benedet it is safe to say each student came away from the class with at least one new tool to apply to their own photography. As an added bonus each student was given a photography workbook which includes additional theory and clever exercises to try at home.

At the end of the day the group again gathered at the gallery to discuss the events of the day and warm up with some much needed tea and coffee. Everyone was pleased with the day but wished there was more time to go into greater detail on the finer points each individual's camera. The idea was presented that Wayne hold a full five week 30 hour course In Holland provided enough students express interest.
